![]() ![]() Over the course of the 70s, the Japanese output improved dramatically, and in many ways these early 70s models are a low point for the brand. These new Epiphones were based on existing Matsumoku guitars, sharing body shapes, and hardware, but the Epiphone line was somewhat upgraded, with inlaid logos and a 2x2 peghead configuration. The Matsumoku factory had been producing guitars for export for some time, but the 1820 bass (alongside a number of guitar models and the 5120 electric acoustic bass) were the first Epiphone models to be made there. Upbeat sounds of today's downtown music reflects the musical impact of Fender electric basses which, for nearly two decades, have meant quality design, durable construction, and great bass sound! Often challenged but never equalled, the big beat sound of a Fender electric bass is distinguishable in any company.īy the end of the 1960s, a decision had been made to move Epiphone guitar production from the USA (at the Kalamazoo plant where Gibson guitars were made), to Matsumoto in Japan, creating a line of guitars and basses significantly less expensive than the USA-built models (actually less than half the price). The Precision Jazz and Telecaster Bass were also available as left handed guitars (additional 10%). The Precision and Jazz were also available with an optional maple fretboard for a small premium (additional 5%). May 1969 prices for these models were as follows: Competition Mustang Bass $229.50 Precision $279.50 (sunburst), $293.50 (blonde/custom finish) Telecaster Bass $289.50 (blonde), $319.50 (Paisley/Floral) Jazz $339.50 (sunburst), $356.50 (blonde/custom finish) Bass V and Bass VI $359.50 (sunburst), $377.00 (blonde/custom finish). In fact it was already being labelled as such in early '69 Fender literature. The fender line was always in flux this 1969 catalog was the last to include Fender's five string Bass V, whilst the Mustang bass (pictured on the previous page in white) was about to be reincarnated as the Competition Mustang, with it's striped body.
